2008 IBA National Meet

2008 IBA National Meet Seminars:

The following seminars (listed in order presented) will be conducted on Friday and Saturday, Aug 15-16, 2008. Information regarding seminar time changes, Conference Room location, etc will be provided at the Registration Table upon check-in.

Main Seminars for Friday, Aug 15, 2008:

    Introduction & welcoming comments, seminar updates, schedule changes, etc.


  • BunBurner GOLD Hell Week
  • - Dale Wilson, IBA Chief Technical Inspector    Length: 60 min, 8:30am - 9:30am

    In July, 2007, Warchild completed a staggering seven (7) consecutive BunBurner GOLD rides totalling well over 10,500 miles in less than 7 days. In this session, he will go over the detailed planning necessary for success, the bike preparation and months of training, and the final execution of the ride with critical assistance from the BBG Hell Week team of Jan and Brian Roberts.


  • Gas Station Pharmacology and Truck Stop Nutrition
  • - Dr. Susan Freeman Welham and LD Rider Andy Kirby    Length: 90 min, 10:00am - 11:30am

    Ever wonder what you can buy at a truck stop to stop the nagging itch, what nutrients your body craves on a multi-day ride or how to assemble a really good first aid kit? The Kirbys present a practical approach to Gas Station Pharmacology and Truck Stop Nutrition to help shorten even the longest days in the saddle.


  • What Riders Wear: Real Gear in Action
  • - Various IBA members     Length: 30 min, 11:30am - 12:00pm

    Fashion or Function? Leather or textile? Foam or shelled armor? Is panty hose still in? Why is traction bad and slippery good? Is high vis yellow the new black? All of us have our unique combination of what we wear when we're crunchin' miles. A half dozen IBR finishers will model their wear from outer shell to their innermost layer - a not-to-be-missed spectacle!

    1:30pm - 3:00 pm:
    • Workshop (F1): - Riding Your First Rally
    • - IBR Veteran Eric Jewell     Length: 60 min, 1:30pm - 2:30pm

      You've done the "individual achievement" rides: Saddlesore, a Bun Burner and maybe even a Coast to Coast but it's not enough; You're ready to compete in a 12- or 24-hour rally. As you prepare by scouring the IBA and LDRider forum for rally tips and words of wisdom everything seems a little disjointed. Here in a 60-minute presentation, IBR 5-time finisher, 4-time podium placer, Eric Jewell will simply put it all together . Riding Your First Rally. He was recognized at the '07 finisher's banquet at one of four riders who embrace the spirit of "individual" competition with his 5th place finish. Eric walks-the-walk. Now's your opportunity to hear this quiet guy share the lessons he's learned first hand.


    • Workshop (F2): - Electrical Wiring 101a
    • - Mark Reis     Length: 90 min, 1:30pm - 3:00pm

      Electrical Wiring 101 is a repeated classroom workshop given by three recognized motorcycle electrical Farkle Masters.

      Mark Reis, Joel Rappoport and George Zelenz will each take a presentation session to discuss and in some cases demonstate basic wiring, soldering, and schematic design concepts to allow farkle implementations that perform in a lucid, cohesive manner, avoiding the easy traps of ground loops, resistance, and other similar pitfalls of when designing/installing electrical farkles. The seminar will assume basic ( if ultimately incorrect ) knowledge of electricity. Red is hot, ground is black. Ohm's law will be mentioned for the curious, but the seminar will deal with connections (crimp, solder, hybrid) and general qualities of design, workmanship, and operation.

      Various vendors who have help support the Iron Butt Association and the sport of Endurance Riding will be speaking during this time.


    3:30pm - 5:00 pm:
    • Workshop (F4): - Efficient Rallying
    • - 1999 IBR Winner George Barnes     Length: 90 min, 3:30pm - 5:00pm

      Wanna run with the big dogs? 1999 IBR winner George Barnes will outline his tried and true strategies for running an efficient multi-day rally. His presentation will include managing Time, Nutrition, Sleep and Checkpoint challenges.


    • Workshop (F5): - Electrical Wiring 101b (repeat seminar)
    • - Joel Rappoport     Length: 90 min, 3:15pm - 4:45pm

      Electrical Wiring 101 is a repeated classroom workshop given by three recognized motorcycle electrical Farkle Masters.

    • Workshop (FM): - Farkle Masters
    • - Various IBA members     Length: 210 min, 1:30pm - 5:00pm

      Six IBA members (Mark Reis, Curt Gran, George Zelenz, Brian Roberts, Carroll Walker, Joel Rappoport) with recognized expertise in "farkle" planning, wiring configuration, and troubleshooting. These IBA Farkle Masters will be available in the bike parking lot throughout the afternoon for counsel and advice regarding the art & science of "farkling" (modifying) your bike for Long Distance riding. (Note: Mark Reis, Joel Rappoport and George Zelenz will also be conducting "Electrical Wiring 101" classroom workshops concurrently. Obviously they will not be in the parking lot during their classroom sessions.)

      Dale "Warchild" Wilson, IBA Chief Technical Inspector, will also be on hand both afternoons to conduct preliminary inspections of auxiliary fuel cells for IBR compliance.

  • 2007 IBR - Panel Discussion
  • - IBA President Mike Kneebone     Length: 90 min, 8:00am - 9:15am

    The 2007 Iron Butt Rally was reputed to be the toughest one yet. 2007 was unique in that it had the largest number of rookie riders because of the IBA Premier Member draw opportunity. The surprise was that about half of the 2007 IBR rookies were not finishers. All were proven distance riders but many were not prepared for was just how long 11 days can be!!! IBA Chairman Michael Kneebone discusses the event with rally vets and rookies to give insight on what it's like to ride the World's Toughest Motorcycle Competition.


  • Digital Photography for Bonus Verification
  • - IBA Tech Advisor/Legendary Hardass  Length: ~ 60 min, 9:30p - 10:30a

    This is a must attend for 2009 competitors!! This will be the only open, live discussion of digital imagery and bonus verification. As the digital age finally comes to the Iron Butt Rally, Chief Technical Advisor Tom Austin will cover the new rules for using digital cameras and make some suggestions for how to choose a rally camera.


  • Electronics Navigation and Mapping
  • - IBR Veteran Rob Nye  Length: ~ 60 min, 11:00a - 12:00p

    Long for the days of paper maps, strings and an abacus? While you can't go back Iron Butt Rally Veteran and offshore navigator Rob Nye will give you a tour of the basics of understanding computing requirements and the differences between the most popular mapping products; Microsoft's Street's N Trips or Deloreme's Street Atlas. Yet another tale of Goliath takes on Sampson. If you are frustrated trying to figure out City Navigator, City Select or what city you're being routed to this is the seminar for you, Rob will also cover routing, waypoint management and exchanging information between your GPS and your PC.

      Saddlesored out? Bun Burnt? Want more out of your IBA riding than sleeping on picnic tables and eating gas station sandwiches? Do you ever have the feeling that you have been missing something in your travels - like everything? Want to do a big ride but just not all at once? Join two time Iron Butt Rally veteran Bill Watt as he drags his patient wife Susan along for 3 National Parks Tours in 13 months leading up to the 2007 Iron Butt Rally.


    • Workshop (S2): Advanced 2XXX GPS
    • - Rob Nye, LD Mega-Nerd   Length: ~ 90 min, 1:30pm - 3:00pm

      GPS Guru Rob Nye once again hosts this hands on workshop, giving you a chance to learn things about your gps you never imagined, ask questions and share info with other riders. Bring your laptop, GPS unit, and any cable/cords and be prepared to expand your GPS universe.


    • Workshop (S3): "Ultimate Togetherness" - Riding 2-Up
    • - IBR veteran Couples   Length: ~ 90 min, 1:30pm - 3:00pm

      For a select few, the challenges and abuse riding a competitive endurance rally solo is not enough. These hardy couples complicate everything by competing 2-Up 24 hours a day, 11 long days together through the most difficult situations imaginable. Come enjoy a few laughs and ask some questions of these IBR veteran two-up couples who've managed to stay married and finish well.

    • Workshop (S4): - Rallying in the Rain
    • - IBR Veteran Jim Owen     Length: 90 min, 3:15pm - 4:45pm

      When talking to any of the 2007 IBR riders about challenges faced during the rally, the one common thread was the daunting eastern storms on the first leg. Five days of continuous, heavy rain, wind, and associated traffic, physically drained and emotionally demoralized (to the point of quitting) many of the riders. Some riders handled it better than others and all learned a great deal. Legendary Jim Owen, who has changed the way IBR top finishers organize and implement their rides, will lead a panel panel of IBR veterans discussing how to better prepare yourself for riding in extremely adverse conditions.


    • Workshop (S5): Advanced X7X GPS
